WOULD THAT I MIGHT SING IT SOFTLY

would that I might sing it softly
[jesu joy of man’s desiring]
as the error can be costly
when love is merely half-inspiring

like snow that turns to slush on meeting
hard implacable unloved ground
tired words and endless bleating
gold-embossed and leather-bound

allow transcendancy transcendance !
don’t frame it like a pin-stuck moth
leave discovery for your descendants
strip sweet faith of gold and cloth

and rules – so many rules – to hamper
heartfelt movement of the heart
rules that crush – or place a damper
on each tender human part

if there is a god out there
recitations are unwise
let your acts outweigh your prayer
in fact skip words – for half are lies
