IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD

(a post script)

If I told you that tall elms and oaks
were each a proper noun
that rabbits were a zillion verbs
would you get it? I’m sure you would.

Who could not understand giraffe’s
an exclamation point! While field mice
are many and several conjunctions
and butterflies quotation marks?

And appleblossoms are adjectives
and sweet ripe pears are pronouns…
Forest ferns? Parentheses of course
and all of these…and trees… and bees…

Viruses? Can’t say exactly what they are
as my thoughts are gleaned from nursery books
though I listen intently to rushing brooks
who’ve taught me more than all so far

.
